The Brave Browser search engine can now filter your search results based on your political leanings.

Brave Software hopes users will create and share their own custom filters for the feature. But at launch, Goggles already comes with two predefined filters, which have been designed to re-order search results to favor left-leaning or right-leaning sources.

The so-called “left” and “right” filters were developed by the team at all sides(Opens in a new window), a site that provides information from a range of media sources. The left filter has been programmed to elevate sources such as CNN, HuffPost, and The New York Times, while the right filter will boost results from Fox News, Breitbart, and The Washington Examiner. Courageous growth

And last year, a Saudi aid worker who used a Twitter account to make jokes about his government was jailed for 20 years. His case is believed to be related to the government infiltration of Twitter.

Problems in China

When the company first introduced its search engine to the Chinese market in 2006, activists criticized it for censoring search results critical of the Chinese government.

“A cloud center in Saudi Arabia will risk lives,” Laura Okkonen of Access Now, the online rights organization that was a key driver of the campaign, told DW.

Activist Investors

More recently, an Access Now-backed activist group tabled a resolution for Google investors to vote on the Saudi controversy at the annual general meeting of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, held on Tuesday. June 1st.

The political issues surrounding the creation of a data center in Saudi Arabia are clear. But what are the technical concerns around so-called cloud services?

More and more private and business users now operate their devices online using the “cloud”. This basically means that your data – things like pictures, documents, music, emails and other messages – is stored somewhere other than the computer or phone in front of you. The software that lets you listen to music or post pictures runs on bigger computers in another location. You access it simply by using the internet.

A “cloud region” is really just a euphemism for where all those other computers are, in what’s called a data center.

Professional opportunities

Until recently, Saudi Arabia was lagging behind in cloud services, but industry insiders say it is now seen as a major new opportunity. Of the three largest cloud operators in the world today, Google will likely be the first to install a data center there. The other major players are Amazon and Microsoft. The Chinese Alibaba already has two data centers in Saudi Arabia.

In terms of technology, there are a number of ways outsiders could access information inside a data center, said Björn Scheuermann, research director at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society. .

Hacking would be one. But as Scheuermann pointed out, “hacking can happen anywhere because, by its nature, it usually happens remotely.” So it doesn’t matter whether a data center is in Saudi Arabia or not.

More specific to Saudi Arabia, it could be a physical breach in a data center. “If someone goes in and gets physical access to the hardware, then it becomes very, very difficult — in many cases, impossible — to guarantee that the data will be protected,” Scheuermann explained.

Data centers tend to have tight security. However, employees entering the center should be screened or they could be forced to extract data, critics have warned.

A greater concern than a physical breach of a center occurs when authorities request the data through legal means. “For example, by a court order that says the data must be handed over,” Scheuermann continued. “The government says these servers are on our territory and subject to our legal system. In an authoritarian system, the defense against legal orders quickly reaches its limits, when your material goods are on the territory of the State.

According to Saudi laws?

Google has a number of pages on its website about how it handles government requests for user information. It follows several stages and every six months provides reports indicating the number of requests received and the number of positive responses. (There are no current statistics for Saudi Arabia.)

Google stresses that it also respects local laws.

It’s a problem in Saudi Arabia, Marwa Fatafta, Middle East policy manager at Access Now, told DW, because “Saudi Arabia’s internet regulatory laws are unclear and ready to be exploited.” .

The country’s newest data protection law, which will come into force early next year, does not allow data collectors to disclose personal data except, Fatafta pointed out, when a government requests it. for security purposes, among other reasons.

The country’s legal system is overseen by the Saudi monarchy. “In such an authoritarian system, it’s hard to imagine how Google, or any individual, could challenge the government,” Fatafta said.

Saudi Cybercrime Law 2007 also comes into play. Google may be asked to block or remove content that violates the law and then notify the Saudi telecommunications regulator. “Saudi Cybercrime Law is one of the most repressive laws in the region,” Fatafta noted.

Using the “cloud” is actually a matter of trust, research director Scheuermann told DW. After all, you are storing your personal or business data with a company, which apparently could access it. It might sound a bit complicated, but the result is effortless user research.

Today’s hybrid search technology allows a query like “stay cool in the summer” on an electronics store website to produce instant results for fans and air conditioners.

Without hybrid search, results may be limited to products containing words used in the query.

In addition to providing greater speed and relevance, hybrid search is more accessible for businesses to implement on their own websites.

A company called Search.io is one organization that is paving the way for a new future for hybrid search, and I recently had the opportunity to speak to CEO and co-founder Hamish Ogilvy.

He updated me on recent developments in this area and how his company’s new tool makes it easier for customers to search company websites. This, in turn, can lead businesses to make more sales.

AI + neural hashing = modern hybrid research

In search, AI replaces strict keyword matching with dense vectors encapsulating text meaning. It has proven to be superior to keywords in terms of relevance, but comes with slower results.

Neural hashing, sometimes referred to as “deep hashing,” helps make vector search as fast as keyword searching. It gets its name from its ability to use neural networks to hash vectors.

Neural hashes compare terms using mathematical expressions. They measure the difference between words and concepts and assign meaning to those that are closer to each other.

What does this mean in practice?

Ogilvy explains:

“In practical terms… AI language understanding can be easily deployed in search technology. Ironically, for many queries, despite the vastly improved relevance, it’s actually faster than keyword research as well.

Neural hashing delivers 99% of the performance of dense vector searching while being over 100x faster and using a fraction of the space.

Ogilvy showed me several examples of natural language queries with and without neural hashing to show how modern solutions are failing retailers and customers.

A query like “something to keep my beer cold” returns a single, irrelevant result on retailer Best Buy’s website. By comparison, the same query with neural hashes applied would return a results page full of beer fridges.

Hybrid search – more accessible than ever for businesses?

Search.io is launching a tool called Neuralsearch, which would combine the speed of traditional keyword research with the precision of vector search.

Simply put, it allows websites to return results more like Google does, without employing an army of search engineers.

It eliminates the need for retailers to add synonyms to their search index, which is time-consuming that can be better spent elsewhere.

Neuralsearch is now in public beta, after private testing with select organizations. Businesses can add it to their sites for free with a 14-day trial.

For an example of how this works in action, Ogilvy tells me that the following company websites already use Neuralsearch:

  • BBC.com
  • LockheedMartin.com
  • Sennheiser.com
  • Catch.com.au
  • RentPath.com

Google is expanding its verification program for financial ads, which will require advertisers in more countries to prove they are authorized to promote financial services.

Verification adds an extra layer of financial fraud protection, helping to ensure people aren’t scammed when they click on search ads.

Google first launched this program in the UK in September 2021, which reportedly led to a noticeable drop in ads promoting fraudulent services.

Following the successful launch in the UK, Google is expanding the verification program to other countries starting with Australia, Singaporeand Taiwan.

What does this mean for advertisers?

Advertisers in the aforementioned marketplaces will need to go through two additional steps before showing ads promoting financial services.

They must :

  • Demonstrate that they are authorized by their respective financial services regulator
  • Complete Google’s Advertiser Verification Program

This policy takes effect on August 30 and advertisers can begin requesting verification at the end of June.

It’s two whole months to be verified and avoid any disruption in ad campaigns.

It seems to take a long time, but advertiser verification is not a quick process. It is better to start earlier than later.

Be verified by Google

Google’s advertiser verification program consists of several requirements that each have their own set of steps to follow.

Advertisers are required to:

  • Answer a series of questions about their business
  • Verify his identity
  • Check details of their business operations

The process is extensive enough that Google doesn’t expect advertisers to complete it in one sitting. After initiating the verification process, you will have 30 days to complete it.

Advertisers who have not completed the new verification process by August 30 will not be permitted to promote financial services using Google Ads.
