How Strange’s Spider-Man relationship compares to Iron Man
Benedict Cumberbatch explains how Doctor Strange’s relationship with Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home is different from Iron Man’s.
Benedict Cumberbatch breaks down the difference between Doctor Strange’s relationship with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) in Spider-Man: No Path Home with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). The Sorcerer joins the upcoming film directed by Jon Watts as a mentor figure for the Wall Robot. Given the multiversal situation Spider-Man finds himself in, as the first revealed No way home trailer, Strange’s presence and guidance seems to be much needed.
Spider-Man: No Path Home follows the trend of his predecessors by pairing Peter with a more veteran figure in the MCU. In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) introduced himself and took the web-slinger on a European adventure that ended in a battle with Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). Prior to that, however, Spider-Man’s first mentor was Tony Stark. It was the genius, the billionaire Avenger who introduced Peter to the larger universe of superheroes he now exists in. Peter and Iron Man became extremely close to the point that they almost had a “father and son” dynamic. However, after Iron Man died in Avengers: Endgame, Doctor Strange is supposed to take over as Peter’s mentor, as the marketing of Spider-Man: No Path Home.
In an interview with Empire (via Reddit’s u / xyz-), Cumberbatch opened up about the nature of his character’s relationship with Peter in the upcoming Marvel Studios and Sony collaboration project. He compares Spider-Man and Doctor Strange’s connection to what fans saw between the young hero and Tony. The actor says it’s “not so intimate” at first, although it becomes “parental” at one point moving like Spider-Man: No Path Homethe story of progresses. Read Cumberbatch’s comments below:
âThere’s a nuance to the Stark relationship. It’s not that intimate to begin with. Based on his experience, it’s a weird dynamic and it turns into something a lot more parenting and corrective. And then that. change again. “
When Cumberbatch was first announced as joining the Spider Man threequel franchise, there have been some negative reactions. Critics have argued that at this point in his MCU journey, Spider-Man should be able to navigate his upcoming adventures on his own. In fact, it was also a recurring criticism of his relationship with Iron Man. That being said, given that Spider-Man: No Path Home deals with a multiversal storyline, it makes sense that Doctor Strange would be involved in some way. This is all the more true as Sam Raimi Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will deal with the same concept. Either way, it seems Marvel Studios and Sony are well aware of fan comments about how Spider-Man should be on his own, given Cumberbatch’s latest more measured comments.
Meanwhile, the actor’s note on the changing nature of Doctor Strange’s relationship with Peter is also interesting. As seen in the Spider-Man: No Path Home trailer, the couple first teamed up to solve the wall robot issue of their superhero identity revealed. However, one particular shot from the same clip sees the wizard hitting Spider-Man in his astral form, hinting at a potential falling out between the two in the film. Since Cumberbatch revealed a “shift” relationship, it will be very interesting to see if a conflict between Spider-Man and Doctor Strange comes to fruition.
