Intel and Google Cloud Partnership Lead to Integration of 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processor in Compute Engine N2 Virtual Machines

Intel and Google Cloud confirm their latest partnership, which should improve the performance of future Compute Engine N2 VMs (virtual machines).

If you have no idea what virtual machines are, they are the emulation of different computer systems. Each virtual machine has its own specialized software, hardware, or a combination of these two components.

They allow you to work in different virtual spaces, even if you are using the same PC or device host.

“These new L2 VMs are priced the same as existing L2 VMs based on 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, and usage can be reduced by using existing L2 usage commitment discounts,” Google said. via his Google Cloud blog post.

The search engine giant also proudly announced that consumers can use the new N2 virtual machines to achieve significant price and performance improvements for a variety of workloads.

Google Cloud explained that its new collaboration with the giant SoC maker allows the company to take advantage of the advanced 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor called “Ice Lake.”

The giant tech company added that this advanced chipset would significantly improve its new model of virtual machine, as the SoC could run at a base frequency of 2.6 GHz and turbo all cores of 3.4 GHz, which leads to a better price-performance ratio of its Compute Engine N2 virtual machine.

As for availability, the new virtual machine product from Google and Intel is expected to arrive in Q4 2021. However, the actual release date is yet to be confirmed.

How Intel’s Xeon SoCs Improve Google’s New Virtual Machine Model?

According to Intel official blog post, the company’s 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors offer the following features, which are expected to further improve the performance of the new Google Compute Engine N2 VM:

  • Intel Deep Learning Boost (Intel DL Boost) provides the flexibility to run complex AI workloads on the CPU and improve inference performance by optimizing computing resources, improving cache utilization, and reducing bottlenecks potential bandwidth throttling.
  • Intel 512 Advanced Vector Extensions (Intel AVX-512) improves performance and throughput for the most demanding compute tasks in applications, such as modeling and simulation, data analysis and machine learning, data compression, visualization and digital content creation .
  • Intel Cryptography Acceleration The engines improve data protection and privacy by increasing the performance of crypto-intensive workloads, including SSL web service, 5G infrastructure, and VPNs / firewalls, while reducing the impact on generalized encryption performance.
