No Way Home Writer Explains Why Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Couldn’t Just Be Cameos
Spider-Man will always be a box office hit no matter what situation he finds himself in, but the idea of all three stars of Spider-Man live-action in the same film proved enough to break records. Spider-Man: No Coming Home continues the story of Tom Holland’s vision of the Web-Crawler, but he also enlists former Peter Parkers Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to help defeat several villains. Some fans might have expected Maguire and Garfield to have little cameos in No coming homebut they actually have pivotal roles in the film, spending the majority of the third act onscreen with Holland.
Erik Sommers, who co-wrote the No coming home script, recently told Gold Derby that Garfield and Maguire could never have been cameos. If these Spider-Men were to be brought to No Way Home, they had to play an important role that honored their heritage.
“I think we knew right away that if we did that, it couldn’t be like those cameos that we were doing for cameos’ sake,” Sommers explained. “The biggest reaction can’t just be ‘I can’t believe they got these guys,’ or something like that. We have to treat them like the characters they are, we have to honor them, we have to honor the We have to give them some kind of emotional journey, they can’t just come and show up for this cameo and then disappear We had to write them as characters, and that was always the goal The challenge was: How are we going to do this ?”
“Of course, the focus has to be on our Spider-Man,” the writer continued. “It’s his journey, his story, and things have to be in service of that. They can’t contradict that or get away with it, but at the same time, we want to give them something that makes sense, and that’s what makes sense. That was the real challenge. Jon Watts deserves a lot of credit for watching that particular ball. In a lot of our conversations, he was really determined to make sure the two Spider-Mans joining the movie had their own journey. We all of them wanted to feel like when Tobey and Andrew go back to where they came from, they’ve learned something and grown up, they won’t be the same, their lives won’t be the same because of what happened during this film, just like our Pierre will no longer be the same.”
