Visit Baltimore’s New Directory of Black-Owned Businesses Ready in Time for the CIAA Tournament

Visit Baltimore has assembled a new directory of Black-owned businesses just in time for an upcoming college basketball tournament in town.| PDF: Visit Baltimore’s Directory of Black-Owned BusinessesThe Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament is coming to Baltimore next week. The association of 12 historically black colleges and universities has chosen Baltimore for its tournament, and the economic impact for the city could reach $50 million. Alisa Brock, owner of the Drama MaMa bookstore in Federal Hill, said being listed in the Black-The business directory she owns will help her business tremendously. “I’m a stationery manufacturing company. We’re kind of like a ‘Build a Bear,’ but for journals, notebooks, and planners,” Brock said. “Without (the directory), a lot of people might not know that we exist or that a person of color runs a stationery manufacturing business or a business like that. So knowing where to find the community, to be listed somewhere where people like you can be inspired by you, who you can be inspired by.” Visit Baltimore, one of CIAA’s partners, put together the directory.| LINK: Buy CIAA Tournament Tickets “We’re going to have hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the country, mostly African Americans, and we thought it would be a good time to celebrate our Black-owned businesses in Baltimore , and created this brand new directory for us,” said Al Hutchinson, President and CEO of Visit Baltimore. The directory lists retail stores, transportation companies, restaurants and more.” (The) reality is that COVID hasn’t helped many of these small businesses, No. 1. No. 2, Baltimore is a city to predominantly black, and we want to make sure that we promote these black-owned businesses, show them that we support that they’re doing a great job here in Baltimore,” Hutchinson said. Erica Bentley, owner of Keepers Vintage in Hampden, said she was delighted to get support from Visit Baltimore. “A lot of times I find people are looking for black-owned businesses to support and it’s amazing to just be part of the catalog where they can find (us) instantly. It’s amazing,” Bentl said. Visitors can get a hard copy of the directory at the Baltimore Convention Center, at any of the 12 tournament hotels or at the Visit Baltimore center.
